Game 5 world series 2024
The bases were loaded and Dave Roberts had just called left-hander Alex Vesia in from the bullpen to face left-handed batter Austin Wells. Aaron Boone countered with right-handed pinch-hitter Jose Trevino, New York’s backup catcher App casinos. Although Trevino represented a somewhat better matchup than Wells (.526 OPS vs. LHP), Trevino was not exactly a force off the bench. His OPS against left-handed pitching this season was .626, and Vesia handles right-handed batters nearly as well as lefties.
Giancarlo Stanton flew out to right before Anthony Rizzo struck out swinging to end the inning. That’s a double whammy for New York, which not only didn’t score but will need the bottom of the order to get the rally started next inning.
The two teams have faced each other in 11 World Series, more than any other teams. When the Dodgers were Brooklyn-based, the Yankees had a commanding 6-1 edge in World Series matchups. Since the Dodgers moved to Hollywood in the late 50s, the teams are even at two a piece. They last met in 1981.
Despite that, all involved parties seemed to be OK with how the incident was handled: The two fans were barred from attending Game 5. The main instigator acknowledged to The Times that he “probably crossed the line.” And Yankees manager Aaron Boone said sternly “there’s no place for that.”
Game 2 world series
Dodgers: RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-2, 3.00 ERA in the regular season)Yamamoto was the Dodgers’ biggest pitching acquisition this offseason, and they’ll lean on him once again this postseason. The Japanese right-hander gave the Dodgers a dominant five innings in their Game 5 win over the Padres in the NLDS and was solid in his lone start against the Mets in NLCS Game 4. In his first World Series start, Yamamoto will now face a Yankees team that he dominated back in June at Yankee Stadium.
You have to go back to 1996 for the last time a team erased a 2-0 series deficit to win the World Series. That team? The Yankees. They came back to beat the Braves in that Fall Classic for the first of their four championships from 1996-2000. New York will have to hope that comeback ability is in their organizational DNA. The Dodgers won an instant classic in Game 1 and were able to avoid disaster in the ninth inning of Game 2.
• Yamamoto was exactly what the Dodgers needed, delivering the 11th start of at least six innings and one or no hits allowed in World Series history. It was the first of those by a rookie and the second by a Dodger, joining Rich Hill in Game 4 in 2018.

Game 1 world series
Alex Verdugo did everything he could to get Nestor Cortes out of the 10th inning. He made an incredible play on a Shohei Ohtani fly ball — shades of Derek Jeter diving into the stands against the Red Sox two decades ago. But, he didn’t have much time to celebrate a play that will become a footnote in Yankees history.
Moments after his error, Torres sparked the most interesting “defensive play” of the evening, when his long fly ball to left-center in the top of the ninth found the glove of a fan positioned at the wall in the pavilion seats. Because the fan had clearly reached over the wall to make the snag, it was ruled — and upheld on replay review — a ground-rule double rather than a go-ahead homer. In a gutsy move, the Dodgers intentionally walked Soto to face Aaron Judge with two aboard, and Blake Treinen came on to get Judge to harmlessly pop out to end the inning.
There was plenty of drama before the grand slam as well. The Dodgers scored the first run, but the Yankees responded with a titanic homer from Giancarlo Stanton. Both starting pitchers, Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty, had good starts, but Flaherty came out in line for the loss.
Game 1 of this year’s World Series will be played at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Friday at 8:08 p.m. ET/5:08 p.m. PT. All proceeding games will start at this time as well, and will be televised on FOX.
